According to the standard BMI test which only takes your age gender and height into consideration the last weight in which I am normal is 87kg. At 88kg I am overweight. So 87kg is my goal. I am currently 100kg. I had my body fat percentage tested today for the first time and it is 13.2%. So if I lose all the fat I will weigh 87kg with 0% body fat, which I presume is not only medically dangerous but also for all practical purposes impossible. So I think my ideal weight according to the BMI is not 87kg as per the standard test but something a bit higher? Or what am I missing here?

use the BMI as a guideline rather than the rule. i think we all have a point where we feel comfortable In our bodies even if the BMI is a bit high. 0% body fat is impossible

BMI is totally unreliable. according to it I should way 85. Im currently 104kg with 9%BF. Best shape of my life.13% is not bad. How did you measure your BF

Thanks Wings and Werner. I am considering a new goal of say 9% body fat instead of a fixed weight. My body fat was calculated by a dietician with calipers.

BMI is a generalized measure, but it does not measure body composition ie. Body fat, lean muscle mass, organ mass, bodily fluids, bone structure etc. I would definitely agree that your plan to focus on a percentage of body fat is a much more effective measure to follow.

Are you super tall or very muscled? 100kg seems very high for 13% bf. I'm 15%+ and I'm 87.

Thanks Charlene. I agree. I am trying to figure out how much.

Hi Jaco. This is what I am trying to figure out. I am a little taller than average, 1,88m. I have average muscles for my age (44yo). When I was 19-20 years of age and in my best shape with very little fat (never measured) I was about 85 kg. If I weigh 100kg with 13% body fat can I then assume that I weigh 87kg blood and guts and 13kg fat? Is the sum that simple? If it is I am thinking of a goal of 87kg blood and guts + 9% body fat = 94 kg as goal. What do you guys think?

Jeanfryer according to doctor Google 9% is with a professional athlete range . If that's you then cool otherwise a up to 15% is still healthy

Okay, well you're 10cm taller than me so you're ideal weight could very well be pretty high compared to mine. It says my ideal weight should be 71kg, but I'm 16kg more than that and I have abs etc. BMI doesn't take muscle into consideration. 9% is super low though. At 8% you start getting issues with hormones. I'd say find examples of bodyfat online and use that. I've been measured at 11% before I started working out but had no signs of being lean. I think they estimate it too low.

Thanks Wings and Jaco. I read up this weekend, body composition targets (which includes body fat) the way to go, instead of BMI. I am going to adjust my targets.
