Day 228- So I reading this book 'Wheat Belly' and I just got the end of everything that modern wheat does to the human body. According to him modern wheat causes 90% of our problems. I know he is really over the top about how many issues can be related to wheat, but on the flip side I can see how this could be true. Lets just say I will find out, the only wheat I am consuming is in beer once a week and if I eat something that it is hidden in. LOL, he even points out that baldness is caused by it, for everyone that does not know, I am bald and shave the hair that I have left.

I am also reading the a book ‘The Art of Running Faster’. This book was written by a ‘professional’ runner and some of the things he is promoting is really make me question how serious I am about running. One of the things he promotes is running everyday and even running twice a day….. not sure I am up for that. I am only 1 chapter into the book, but he is big into spending a ton of time training. I just don’t see this happening. Another point he makes early in the book is what is the point of training if you are not pushing yourself. If you go out and run the same all the time your chances of improving your time is not very high. So he thinks you should do long runs once a week, easy run once and hard training the rest. Hard training is fast short runs, intervals, etc. Another point he makes is to increase speed that your feet have to hit the ground more often and one of his drills is just making your feet move quicker and the reverse of the drill is making your knees come higher so you can do longer strides.

With all that being said, I ran intervals this morning just for the simple fact that the last race I had no kick in the last 500m, I wanted to kick but just could not do it…….

I am off to see the Young Dubliners tonight, so tonight is a relax night and few beers.

Life without a cause, if a life not worth living….

I've heard others talk about that wheat belly book-is it worth reading even though it is slightly exaggerated?

I have celiac (allergic to wheat, rye, and barley) My kids are also gluten intollerant - I have to tell you that once my family cut out grains we saw a plethora of improvements all across the board. The theory is that humans were never intended to eat grains - grains infact have a toxin in them so we won't eat them. I say give it a try and see if you notice any differences! A friend of mine went totally paleo at 40 and began to do cross fit - he has never felt or looked better! And his hair grew in thicker too - reversed some of his MPB

I am reading Healthier Without Wheat and just got The Gluten Connection from the library today. From all I've read, and experienced...most people are better off without it and the version of wheat that we eat today is so chemically altered, it's nothing like what our ancestors ate and really is poison. I've been told (and read) to go gluten-free since I am hypothyroid and I do feel much better without gluten. Still learning and it is hard to change but worth it.

My Sister had unexplained swelling in her legs and stomach. After 3 days wheat free it started magically melting away - 17 pounds almost overnight. I reserve wheat products for special occasions.

I never would have believed it, but I found that when I eliminated wheat and other grains, the pain I had in my hips every night was gone. And the pain from the arthritis and pseudo-gout in my knees was drastically reduced to the point where I was able to cut back on my pain medication. When I had a small piece of bread with dinner one evening, the pain came back, and took a few days to improve again. All you can do is try and see if it makes a difference to you. Some people, I believe, are less sensitive to foods and environmental stuff than others. If you are sensitive, it is worth adapting to eliminate the complications.

I agree that reducing wheat and yeast products makes a huge difference for me and my ability to lose weight. I am not sensitive to gluten but reducing or avoiding it also is helpful!

For the book, it is kind of a 'dry' read but he does try to spice it up.He uses a lot of medical terms over and over so that may get to you if you are not into it. As someone who works in the in parts of the ag research industry, I can tell you that the wheat we eat today is not the wheat we ate 5 yrs ago and not even close to 100 yrs ago. Another thing that bothers me, is there is a fad diet out there of going gluten free and you will lose weight, this is not true for most. The problem is folks never reduce the number of cals they eat. It is the same flaw with most of tha fad diets, you starve your body of one of the major groups and you drop quick, but can not maintain it.

another thing that he does not address much is corn. The corn we eat today is much different that what we use to eat. He does hit on HFCS, but I stopped eating that 3-4 years ago as much as I could.

Yes, you are so right - giving up wheat is not the key to weight loss. A lot of the "gluton free" foods on the market are far from healthy.

Yeah, corn is a replacement for many of the wheat and other gluten-laden ingredients. I've been reading how it's no better (even the non-GMO corn) than the gluten we are working to avoid.

I read the book twice… For 3+ years I have been diligently trying to lose weight, Weight Watchers, dieting, walking 5 days a week 2.5 mi. I could lose weight only if I would cut calories extremely, then at the same rate would gain it all back even on a low calorie diet and exercise 5 times a week. I heard about this book and also was looking into Veganism and Leptin resistance at the time. So I cut out Wheat, Vegetable Oil, and sugar. I got my weight back down, read the book, surprisingly my weight stayed the same over the next few weeks. I have been tracking my weight for 3+ years and this is the first time that it is stable. No wheat! So I did some tests, pizza, 2 days later bloated/sick feeling and up 4lbs. Took about 3 days to get back down. But now I don't count calories at all anymore, eat plenty of rice and corn products, avoid vegetable oils; sugar not so much, and after 3 months have stabilized the 25 lb loss. I also noticed no more feeling constipated all the time, but I think that was the bloating I was feeling from wheat.
