Yesterday I drove out of town to visit my dad, who is not well. He has 2 kinds of cancer (one he had chemo for earlier this year and it is in remission at the moment) and the other he starts radiation treatments for on Thursday. On top of that, he just had his second surgery for enlarged prostate. All of these treatments are wearing him down significantly. I'm writing about this because sadly it has taken his illnesses to make me super motivated to do everything I can to get in a good health and fitness situation for myself. You see, my dad was always in great physical shape. My whole life i have seen him as active and busy. I remember asking him 30 years ago why he goes jogging (and then fitness walking later) every day. he said he watched his father die of diabetes complications (I was about 6 years old) because his father was very overweight and didn't, in my dads eyes, try to get in better health. my dad said he was never going to let himself fall into that trap. so he jogged and walked and stayed physically active. Now here I am, watching my father's health decline, and I'm thinking that I better get in shape now before MY health starts to decline one of these years! Isnt it funny how some things repeat themselves? my dads motivation was his father's health problems. now i am finding motivation from my own father's health problems.... On the other hand, i set certain goals for myself with rewards that are all about ME and something i am looking forward to. So it's all good.
