Dear Erin,

5 days is NOT a plateau. Yes, you've increased your caloric intake to about 1400/day from ~1150 a day, but that doesn't prove that eating a bit more is counterproductive to your goal. You KNOW that eating under 1200 a day for over a month probably damaged your metabolism a bit, so when you introduced new calories, it's entirely possible that your body has needed a few days to adjust and take note of the changes. You're also on your TOM, which affects this stuff as well. You've been going to the gym and working harder everyday there, drinking water, watching your sodium and still, you're 183. You *want* to give up because you're frustrated, but here are some reasons you shouldn't:

1) If you give up, you won't have this energy, or this glow, or this lighter feeling that you've had the past 2-3 weeks since your body has adjusted to whole foods.

2) If you give up, you're going to lose the muscle you've gained, and the endurance you've built up from your hard work at the gym!

3) If you give up, you're either dooming yourself to see 183 again, or to never be as low as 183 again! Once your body decides it's ready, you're going to see 180, 170, 160. You have a choice to make whether you want to see this stupid number ever again or not.

So, don't give up. 1400-1500 calories a day is not enough to maintain your weight, so you are going to lose when it's time. Go to the gym today, keep eating what you've been eating and trust the math. And when you're done that, march into that bathroom and apologize for all the horrible things you said to the scale this morning!

Lovingly,
Erin

I love your letter to yourself. It's important to practice kindness to yourself throughout this journey, and you are, in fact, doing that. I wish I had been smart enough to write such a wonderful letter to myself when I was going through what I considered "plateaus." Keep your chin up, and I'm sure in no time you will see a major difference in the scale.

What a great letter! You hit on a lot of things that I struggle with, too. While I know it's impossible to gain weight eating less than I need, the perfectionist in me stresses over 5 extra calories! I know this was a letter to you; but I feel like it was a letter to all of us, as well. Best wishes!

:) Dear Erin, You are totally right on all counts. Love, Kate :) (BTW, I raised my calories to 1800 and apparently I'm still losing! You will lose if you stick it out, for sure!)

Erin, this was a great letter that I think MANY people would benefit from reading. You are doing great & I'm so proud of you for writing this to yourself! And I'm glad that you took the advise to up your calories. 5 days definitely isn't a plateau & the scale will start moving along again just as before. Keep it up! Your love, care & respect for youself shines through in this letter, and it's so wonderful to see! = )

Thanks guys! It's quite a change from when I started, it was hard to find any love or respect for myself then. I think I might be going a bit crazy as I was really fighting with that scale. I weighed myself like 4 times. I stepped on, and kind of like the price is right spinny thing, it stopped momentarily on 182 before settling on 183. I was like "really, this is how it's gonna be?!" So I stepped off, on, 183. Off, on, 183. Off, on, 183, then I lifted up my toes to see if that would make it 182. Then I was like "UGH FINE" and unleashed a few four-letter words. Hahaha. I've never claimed to be sane. ;)

Hahaha!! I do the exact same thing!! I step on it, get off, move it over an inch, step again...hold the wall...step on, let go!! I think when we're so desperate to see the scale move even one pound, we try anything to make sure it does!! Good luck and again, i loved your letter to yourself!
