catie b's Journal, 16 Oct 07

Ok, I am new at this. I hate journaling or bloggin. I always feel like what I am writing is stupid. But here goes.....

I am starting a new diet plan. I have tried pretty much all of them and the only one that seems to work for me is Weight Watchers. I never had a weight problem when I was younger. About 2 years after I graduated high school I started putting on weight. I never really though I was a FAT as I really was, until I look at pictures now do I really realize how fat I was. I think I got up to about 194. Then I tried Atkins and lost 20 lbs in about 3 months. Then I gained about 10 back and gave up for a while, until I got engaged. A little less than a year before my wedding I bought the Weight Watchers books on ebay and decided to go to a meeting. I really liked it and liked how simple it was. I weighed myself everyday and had lost about 2.5 lbs the first week. But when I went to the weigh in of my second week, they said I had only lost a half of a pound!!! I was furious and vowed to never go back. And I didn't, but I did keep up on the Weight Watchers. I started running too and I ended up loosing 43 pounds! I weighed 141 the day of my wedding and couldn't be happier.
Now the problem, on our honeymoon I ended up gaining 9 pounds. That really did not bother me too much. I kept running and in October of 2006 I ran my first 5k. I was obsessed with running. I really wanted to buy a treadmill, but they are so expensive, I really couldn't. So I stopped running over the winter for a few reasons (ex. it was too dark, didn't want to get injured on the ice, etc.) So over the winter I gained another 5 lbs of pure fat (plus a lot of my muscle I worked so hard for turned to fat). So when I started running again in the spring, I developed a stress fracture and had to wear a walking cast for almost 2 months. I couldn't do any excercising. By the time I got home from work, I was so exhausted from lugging that thing around all day, I would just go straight to bed. So here I am 2 months post-boot, and I am ready to start running again, but I am scared I will just re-injure myself. So I am going to start running again slow and start Weight Watchers and see what happens.

Good luck...remember to stretch first. Also, I don't know how old you are, but I have learned I cannot be a weekend warrior. Even though I feel 18, my body just doesn't work the same as it did back then. Start out slow and build up. Remember you didn't gain your weight in a day and you aren't going to lose it in a day either. You may also want to do some weight training to stregnthen your body and help prevent future injuries. Good Luck!

Go easy on the running. What is wrong with walking. Take care.

I too have gotten into running again (and refocused on Weight watchers). Has your Doctor said it's OK to run now? If so, make sure you have really good shoes AND buy gel inserts to go inside of them. Sure does lessen the shock on your feet/knees. And as others posted, start slow. I also lift 2 days a week to keep my muscles/bones strong and prevent injuries. It sure seems to help. Good luck and happy running!
