acastiglione's Journal, 12 Sep 08

I'm frustrated. I'm gaining not losing and I've been trying to really pay attention. I'm trying to drink more water..watch my NC's..and I'm doing my situps everyday and trying to walk more. I guess we all have our bad weeks.

Trying to get used to journaling...joined the track everything challenge to try and force me. Maybe I'm taking in more carbs and calories than I realize...I think at least with the carbs I'm on track, but I'll utilize the functions of this website and see what the real truth is!

We got an order of peaches...the BEST peaches I've ever had in at work through a charity. I've kept myself to only one (8NCs)a day, but maybe the sugary fruit is just enough to knock me out of whack? Hmmm...I'm going to go without today and see what happens.

Its so hard to figure this out when you are stalling. I know I have certain triggers that will, out of the blue, just stop my weight loss. Even though I've been eating them before without any side effects. Cheese is one of those things for me. And artifical sweetner. But it sounds like you are moving in the right direction. Maybe try to cut the fruit out for a few days and see if it kicks your metobolism back in. You just have to figure it out by trials and tribulations!

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. The fruit is the only thing I can think of that's changed. I've only had berries since I started this thing and didn't think a peach would kill me, but they are much more sugary so maybe my body just really doesn't like that.

The fruit is definitely the culprit. If you have a high carb item like that you have to eat at least that much in protein too so your blood sugar doesn't spike and send you out of ketosis. Plus I don't think you're eating enough to lose if what you entered in your food journal is all you ate. If you eat fruit, say 8 nc of it, then eat about 8g protein with it to keep your blood sugar level. It is a trick I learned from the diabetic educator in my office. Fruit is a trigger for a lot of people. Some fruit is worse than others. Can the peaches with no-sugar added pectin and save them for OWL. Get your carbs more from veggies. :) Good luck.

Ok, good to know. I had ordered these peaches before I started the diet, and when they came in I figured, 'how bad can a peach hurt?' OY! Now I know!

Sararay - that is excellent information. I've never thought about covering my carbs with a protein. I don't eat much that would require it, but this will be a great tip if I do. Thanks!

Would Protein Shakes cover it? I eat steak and stuff for dinner sometimes, but not every night...so is that a good way to get some more protein? I have some soy protein powder at home...just haven't used it because I used to mix it with OJ and Bananas...not exactly helpful with the Atkins thing. :-)

I think the Doctor (Dr. Atkins) recommends some protein at every meal. And he hits upon what sara said - always have protein when you eat those higher sugar (but natural) things like fruit. I am guilty of sneaking in some berries, and I had peaches too this summer. But I wasn't losing weight at the time, just trying to make sure I wasn't gaining. I still will have a few berries here and there. But on this carb challenge I've only had them once (today, incidently!!) because I really want to lose!!

Forgot that I was going to say that I don't use the protein powder - I think its rather high in carbs, isn't it? - Besides, I like to EAT all my carbs!! I'd rather have the fruit with a little cottage cheese or a chunk of cheddar. Or even with a little chicken salad.

Actually the soy protein powder is low in carbs...but then I heard today that soy can slow the metabolism...maybe I'll check carb levels in whey powder. I'm just trying to think of a high protein option because I'm not a cook and I hate being in the kitchen...and at work it'd be much easiers to just pull a shake out of the fridge and drink it than do anything else. Thanks for the advice though! I had two peaches just taunting me by sitting on my desk and I threw them at my co-worker. :-)
