Been reading 📖 up a lot on nutrition. I was surprised to find that those with hypothyroidism 🙋🏼‍♀️ should eat a minimum 100g of carbohydrates a day as it helps the body convert T4 to T3. Thought I’d mention it as so much talk of low carb diets!

Thanks, that's good to know, not that I have less than that gotta have my carbs. 😂 does that include if your not actually producing any of the thyroid hormone? my results where crazy bad, over 100 TSH and they couldn't even put a number on the T4. Dr called me and said she wanted to check I was still standing! I later found out that with those results If it had been left untreated I could have ended up in a coma! Now that was a very scary thought. 😑

I was only told to take tablet (been on levothyroxine for 12 years) Never given any advice. Lots of info out there. This is some info from deliciouslyorganic.net - Eat two Brazil nuts a day. Brazil nuts contain selenium and this nutrient helps convert T4 to T3 - Reduce your sugar intake as much as possible. The liver is one of the three organs that controls your blood sugar levels. The more sugar you eat, the more stress you put on your liver which can reduce thyroid hormone conversion - Make sure you are eating enough carbohydrates. While a low-carb diet is all the rage right now, going too low carb can inhibit the conversion of T4 to T3 in the liver. A minimum of 100g of carbohydrates a day from foods such as properly prepared legumes, lentils, potatoes and other starchy vegetables is a good place to start. - Consume foods rich in Vitamin A daily. Vitamin A is actually essential for proper detoxification. It’s important to remember that Vitamin A is found only in animal foods.

That is scary Dani. Not entirely sure. Just started reading up on it. I just wanted to put some info out there as I was always lead to believe that you just popped a pill or two (depending on dose) and then everything was fine!

Hi pal, I’ve followed a low as possible carb, fat calories eating regime for 2 1/2 years. Just before the lockdown I had my bloods checked and was told I was seriously low on vitamin E. I eat more carbs now but no-unrefined carbs. I get my carbs from my veg and fruit but if I’m still low I have a protein bomb low fat yogurt, sometimes make a carb loaded smoothie.

Rootfunctionalmedicine.com: In times of chronic stress, your body releases higher amounts of a stress hormone called cortisol. At this time, your body is focused on the cortisol release, so it does not put much effort into converting T4 into T3. Instead, it redirects T4 to another hormone called reverseT3 Zinc and selenium are two essential minerals required for the conversion of T4 to T3. Foods rich in zinc: oysters, beef, crab, pumpkin seeds, cashews, and chickpeas Foods rich in selenium: brazil nuts, tuna, halibut, sardines, turkey, and beef liver

There is loads more to read. Do some research. I would be really interested if people would report back if they notice any changes. I’ve added a few things to my shopping list but probably a few days till I’m near a shop. Take care x

Check out thyroiduk.org: The Role of Vitamins and Minerals I know losing weight is important to many of us otherwise we wouldn’t be on FS. However there is a lot more to it than just cutting calories. We need to take care of ourselves and make sure we are fuelling our bodies with nutritious food. I’m almost convinced that if we concentrate more on giving our bodies what they need the weight will take care of itself (of course that doesn’t mean you can stuff yourself 🐷 on other junk food!)

There’s loads on line pal, my favourite is a frozen banana, blueberrys, brambles, Apple, half a low fat yogurt and sometimes a table spoon off galaxy light drinking chocolate mixed with skimmed milk. I tried it with water but it was minging! Also I’m not keen on grapes or pears in a smoothie. Not nice. If you freeze the banana first it makes a nice cold filling smoothie. I’m afraid I’m yet to try any green smoothies, but I will and if I find any that don’t taste toxic I’ll let you know. I drink green tea but find it revolting so I let it go cold and down it in one. 😂 that’s my punishment for having a previous life off Guinness and kebabs 😆 it’s George by the way.

Thanks for tips. Will have a look and experiment. I have tried spinach with banana and it tasted fine but that’s as adventurous as I’ve got with greens!

Thanks mhairinic for the info. I too have been on thyroxine for 13 years, but luckily happen to follow most of the advice you have posted and eat lots of unrefined carbs already. Piqued my interest though and I will definitely have a google. Such a shame the medical profession gives no guidance when it is diagnosed. Many thanks for posting again👍

I have Hashimoto’s. I’m always getting conflicting advice on what to eat. Some say no carbs, some say no gluten...I don’t have a clue anymore as when I cut things out I feel rough and put on weight. I tried intermittent fasting to try and loose just a few lbs that the disease caused and put on 3st in a couple of months because of it. So that was a big mistake! I’ve never been over weight in my life. I’m just calorie counting at the moment and making sure I actually eat and it seems to be coming off quick.

George - just read this one: 2 celery stalks, 1 large carrot, 1/2 medium-sized beetroot, 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger (optional) Think the colour and sweetness would disguise the green 😉 going to add to shopping list

Cat deliciouslyorganic.net : a void intermittent fasting. While this is all the rage right now, most who are struggling with thyroid issues, need to avoid intermittent fasting because it puts too much strain on the adrenals and liver

Catt sorry to hear this. I guess it will never be a one size fits all and got to do what is best for you. Glad the weight is coming off

Your right. I’m just about to have tests for Cushing’s as I have developed symptoms of adrenal issues since fasting.
