Dean Health Journey's Journal, 26 Nov 20

Greetings Everyone...and Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm new to the FS community (less than 24 hours) and am so impressed with everyone's efforts and commitment. I stumbled upon this app by "accident," but I'm starting to think there are no accidents, and I was meant to find this app and community.

My name is Dean. I'm 50. Decided after decades of struggle to lower and manage my weight, a more serious efforts needed to be made, mainly in the way of tracking my calories AND most importantly tracking my carbs. I think a lot of us who have hit 50 and have been carrying stubborn belly fat for (sigh) decades are dealing with Insulin Resistance (IR) and the only way to reverse it is through a low carb diet and exercise. Of course, good sleep and stress management are important too! Anyway, let me be clear that this is what feels right to me at this point in my life and not pretending to be an expert or presuming to give advice to anyone else. I'm happy to share my experiences and insights for anyone who is interested. :)

I'd love to hear from you. I'd be curious to know things like:

1. how long you have been using the FS app
2. how/why you came to choose the FS app (was it "random" like my experience or was it after some test trials with other apps)
3. what devices/apps you sync with the FS app when it comes to tracking your exercise (I use a Polar heart rate monitor, like an actual chest strap and the Polar Beat app which to my surprise doesn't directly sync with FS...but it does sync with Google Fit which syncs with FS so I am going to try that)

Well, thanks for reading if you actually got this far! I'm looking forward to getting to know you and to support and encourage your efforts, and to celebrate your progress on here! ☺️

Hi Dean on my first cuppa so not ready for a full interview yet but just wanted to say welcome. FS is old and although over the years they have updated it..It probably lacks a bit here and there. People mostly like it for how easy it is to connect with people here and support friends on the weight-loss of health journey. Good luck. Hope you like it here. and Happy Turkey Day (it has very few carbs I think)

Thanks for taking the time to say hello. I'm really enjoying the simplicity and functionality of the app. Looking forward to learning from others and sharing progress. Congrats on your success with the keto program! Gonna do my best today to keep things reasonably low carb today...we shall see!

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm new to FS as well. I used another app previously with good success - lost 30 lbs by measuring my food and tracking my calories religiously. Got a bit slack and have slowly gained some back (tho not enough to worry me - it's just time to step in and stop it now before I gain it all back =)). My old app has become increasingly unreliable (the server is down so often it's basically unusable), and the community wasn't very good (they tended to be very critical of each other), so I found my way here. =) My issue has always been portion control, so I'm continuing to train myself to eat appropriate amounts of food. I anticipate this will be a lifelong struggle, but at the least I am aware of it. =) Welcome to FS, I'm excited to follow your journey!

Thanks so much for sharing, she_loves. Your comment confirms that I did indeed chose the right app. ☺️ Don't know why it took me so long to realize the importance of tracking calories and macros, but now I'm like, "Duh, you absolutely need to do this." Lol. It's a good feeling to know I'm not alone and that so many others share this effort...and the fact that we can do so as a community is even better! Thanks again! Excited to follow your progress as well!

Welcome Dean! I've been on FS since early 2016, when I found low carb high fat (LCHF) way of eating. I needed some way of tracking my carbs. I don't sync, I keep a spreadsheet with years and years and, well, decades of weight history. My highest weight was about 310lbs, the year my father passed away. A year later, I was diagnosed type 2 and that scared me to lose some weight. I dropped to 260-ish, and held that until my mom passed in 2013. It took me 2 years, and another high A1C to scare me back to health. I found LCHF, and FS and dropped to 180. Another death sent me back to carbs and 260 again. I have *finally* come to the realization that I am addicted to carbs and CANNOT eat them. I'm back under 200 and have my sugars back under 5mmol/l. Good luck on your journey!

Thanks for sharing your story, lchfjo. Like you, I am following a lower carb, higher fat diet with moderate protein. I am exercising every day: a combination of walking, aerobic exercise, circuit/resistance training, and HIIT workouts...basically a healthy amount of activity every day to improve my circulation and get my heart rate up. I don't think I'm addicted to carbs, but I definitely have had an unhealthy attachment to food in general, so I can totally relate to what you have shared! I am looking forward to celebrating your progress!prof

I was actually following an LCHF diet when I first found the website. I had bought into the whole "calories don't matter" and "just eat low-carb whole food and the weight will come off" but I found that wasn't the case at all, and that it was very possible to overeat fatty foods, even without sugar or starch. I started using the app to get a better idea of the fat, protein and calories in different foods. Then, I decided I didn't want or need to limit carbs all the time, and that the answer is balancing your calories in and calories out depending on whether you want to gain, lose, or maintain. Now I use the website to track my intake, record my exercise (calories out are a guess and I assume they're overestimated), get ideas and motivation.

I’ve been using FS off and on for 3 years. I was doing LCHF and couldn’t stop losing weight and I was not logging just counting carbs <50g. I started doing <100g carbs and logging macros. Last spring I stopped counting just eating the foods that make me feel best (limited sugar and grains). Occasionally I use the app to input my meals for the day to see the macros particularly protein. My weight has been stable since 2017.

Hi there! I've been using FatSecret since 2014. Although I took an 18 month hiatus when I got to my goal weight and during which I gained back 60 pounds. I came back and got back to a healthy weight. I stumbled across the website by accident while just looking for someway to log my calories. Later on I downloaded the app. I'm a calorie counter, that's what works for me. I have my Fitbit synced to the FS app. I wish you the best of luck.
