backincontrol's Journal, 23 Feb 14

Good morning. I started this yesterday and got my husband on board today. What I realized with my food intake yesterday, is that it is not the calories I should be concerned with...as much as it is my carb intake..my hubby says there are good carbs vs. bad carbs...but doesn't it take just as long to burn off one type as it does the other?

Hi BackInControl .. I, too, just joined this community a couple of days ago and am still finding my way around to take full advantage of all the great information that's shared in here. I know there are "good fats and bad fats", but I don't know if that holds true for carbs. I'm sure someone can help you with a solid answer, though. Good luck to both you and your husband!

There are slow burning carbs and faster burning carbs. The faster burning carbs are like pasta, flour, sugary foods. You eat them and you are hungry quickly. That's why when you are tired, many times your body craves sugar because it raises your energy levels quickly. Slower carbs are in vegetables (high carb content in corn, potatoes, etc.) They have more fiber so they take longer to digest and keep you more satiated. Fruit are carbs to but have a higher carb content. People become wary of fruit because of it's sugar, but honestly no one ever got fat on apples and pears. You have to find the right carb balance for you. If you are doing very low carb than you may or may not have to count calories. You can gain even on Atkins if you take in more than you burn off. But all the protein usually curbs people's appetite so you don't overeat. Some foods are better for you than others.

Thanks Suzi161, I need to find a happy medium with everything! I totally need to do a little more research on the matter. I want fast results so I am trying to keep low calories around 1400 to start with. The RDI they suggested for me was at 1900. So if I stay between the two I hope to succeed. If I don't see results this week I will adjust until I do.
