So it happened today…actually a few times….I get that question, “are you ok?” Whenever I would work towards being healthier, that question will inevitably come up. In the past I would simply say no, but then I would look at myself and think maybe I had done it wrong. What would happen next is I would quit my goal and gain weight…not as much as I had lost but a lot of progress would be lost.

This time is different. Sure, there are challenges, but this time just (as my son and his friends might say) “hits different”. Comments from others (compliments or health inquiries) are not part of the plan. Sure, it’s cool to be acknowledged for the work, but this is for me…it’s not for another, or opportunity or even a love interest…it’s only for me. So, I am the arbiter, I am the decision maker and I like where I am and the direction this work is taking me.

Now, to be fair some of my clothing is falling off. I am buying new stuff (and maybe find a tailor to see what can be taken in) so until that is done and the program, I’ve committed to is complete, my dress may get “sketchy” from time to time.

I guess I am writing this to send a message to myself; don’t allow the inquiries of well-meaning individuals deter from reaching the goals that have been established.

I hate it when they ask "are you okay?" I've heard it from friends and it makes me angry. Sometimes I think it comes from people are used to me being fat, and my changing that threatens the status quo and it makes them uncomfortable. Keep doing what you're doing. It's obviously working!

Excellent post AND sometimes people can feel can feel a little unsettled in their "new body" as well. I don't think these comments are necessarily due to a sort of jealousy. If you've been overweight for a long time the fact that you're doing something about it comes as a surprise to others, especially if your intentions weren't announced. Since people do lose weight when ill or depressed, maybe we ought to take the inquiries as evidence of caring. And it may be more disheartening to lose a bunch of weight and nobody notices or they are afraid to say anything for fear of offending!

I lost 50 l s total and as I was on my journey for a healthier lifestyle I got that comment alot plus some family members would say I must have an eating disorder! I went to a nutritionist to lose my weight and I ate more than most people. It was just that I ate mostly green, non processed foods. I worked out 5 days a week as well. It used to frustrate me but now I just ignore negative comments and keep going with my healthy lifestyle.

I would choose to take comments like “are you ok”, as a caring comment unless you know that the person is hinting that you look ill. Your friends and family are probably just really actually asking, ARE YOU OK, is there something about your health that you are not sharing. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Also, check yourself in the mirror. Is your selected way of eating leaving you looking gaunt, pale, Ill looking. Are you doing physical activity to tone and build muscle or just with sagging skin.

I lived with a derailer because I lose weight first in my face last in my hips. I’d get the … Gee you look so drained, you need to eat more. Next thing you know he’d be bringing more, and more treats and my diet was in the garbage bin!! It took a medical scare before my husband realized that more than my hip size was at risk here. Then after awhile he became one of my best supporters, but it took years to get to this point.

I don't know, when I get asked this, or when people say you are too thin, or drawn a lot of time its their own insecurities!! It never seems to come from someone who is trim and fit themselves, and if you have built a lot of muscle and lean mass you can hold a very tight shaped physique without ever depriving yourself. Please view it for what it is, projection on their own state of health and wellness. I really was sabotaged more than once by this type of concern, which can undermine your confidence in your path. Try to block it out!!

Doing it for yourself is really the best! At different times in my life, I've had people throw hints that I needed to lose weight, and also tease that I was too thin. When I was heavy I didn't care what people thought because I knew i chose that. When I was too thin I guess it was the same. You can't please anyone but yourself! But those that sabotage your healthy eating are the worst! It's hard to stand strong against that if food is your weakness. I'm constantly battling that even now because I live with someone who loves food even more than I do, but he never gains weight. He has some serious health issues that I try to cater his diet to but he struggles so much with food cravings. It's hard but I'm determined to stay on track with my own plan. Ultimately I know the amount I eat is my choice. It comes down to mental toughness! Good luck to you! You CAN do this!!!
