over the past yr my 17 yr relationship has taken a huge hit. he's clinically depressed. has been gor years. over the last couple of years he's continually shutdown and pulled away from to the point I've been left feeling neglected, lonely, and resentful. I'm having all these health issues and a ton of body issues. I'm 45. everything sags lol. losing weight means lose skin, on top if stretch marks, and sagging everything. so when u ignore your girl, and stop touching her it hurts her soul especially at this time in her life. Anyway we broke up a month ago. I couldn't take it anymore. couldn't take crying anymore so I shutdown. then he finally noticed something was wrong. we had a fight and I told him I was done. Sunday we talked. apparently he's been suicidal since October. he doesn't want to burden me with how he's feeling. yea that worked out real well huh. so I guess we are working on things now. anyway standing up for myself has got my eating habits back under control. wish me luck you guys. I'm not sure if I want to stay in this relationship or not but I'm honestly going to give him a chance. but he has alot of work to do. depression is hard for a person but it's harder for the people that they live with trust me. it's an enemy that can't b seen. and when a person refuses to go get help for it...what can u do?

I struggle with depression, and I know it can be hard for those around me. Take care of yourself. It's more than OK to focus on yourself and your own mental and physical health. At a certain point, he will have to rescue himself, whatever it takes

Confidenceman I know it's not at me personally but it still hurts to be shut out and ignored. It hurts to b made feel like your unattractive. It hurts when they shower all their attention on the kids and ignore you. When u reach out for them constantly and emotionally they are just not there for you. How are you not supposed to to be hurt or take it personal. He says he doesn't want to burden me. Can't he see shutting b out causes me more pain? Avoiding spending time with me alone by actively inviting everyone, I see that. Yes he needs help. I fear what leaving him again will do at this point. I care about him deeply. I just feel so confused and stuck.

My suggestion is either couples counseling or counseling for yourself so you can learn to care for yourself while being supportive of him.
