Got through my first day of calorie counting pretty easily. My goal was to stay under 1800 calories (which I may lower soon)...I came in under 1500 (even with having some sugar free pudding after dinner, and some popcorn while watching tv). Drank plenty of water/flavored water....didn't even drink a diet soda, which I think explains the headache I had in the evening. I have today's menu all planned out...can't avoid having lunch at someplace like McDonalds after swimming, but I've looked over the nutritional menus and feel I can get through a meal there in about 500-600 calories (probably a kids meal with hamburger, some apple slices, and maybe even let myself have a handful of fries). I feel confident I can be active with my kid and still stay within my goal. My meal plan for today should take me to about 1700 calories. Counting calories is more time consuming for me than the South Beach Diet was, but I think the flexibility it will afford me will make me much more likely to stick to it (at least during these busy summer months).

Many years ago I did the Calorie Counting thing, and it worked VERY well!! I believe I lost about 30 or so lbs on it and was the thinnest I had ever been since college. It was very time consuming, but this site takes away a lot of the mathematics involved. At that time, though I was a grad student and always eating "conveniently" at McDonalds or Ponderosa... anyway, I recall that subway 6" subs (i did ham & turkey w/ lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles - no mayo or cheese) and McDonald's hamburger happy meals were really decent on calories, and I ate lean pockets a lot, too. All very filling, easy to grab on the go, and decent on the calories. Wishing you all the best!!

Thanks jennybean. Yeah, the happy meal seems to be one of the lowest calorie convenience options around, and it turned out to be more filling than I expected. Subway is another food I like to grab when we're on the go. At Sonic, I get the grilled wrap...about 320 calories and it's pretty big, though their kids meal isn't bad either (and they have an option to swap the fries for a banana). Between the food diary on here, and keeping a spreadsheet of what I eat (where I include calorie counts for everything), it should be much easier once I figure out the numbers for the things I eat most often.
