Today I'm thinking about: What to eat??? Actually, I think about that everyday, all day, continuously. It's probably why I have over weight issues. But back to my topic... What to eat?

The given: Raw vegetables. Non-fatty meats. Fruits. Water. Tea.

But the gray areas for me are grains & starches. Oatmeal, rice, corn, potatoes... Do they belong in a weight loss diet? In the beginning of a diet plan, I always ban these foods from my life. But as I allow them to creep back in, I typically stop losing pounds. Is it that I'm slipping in my resolve? Is it that these foods are higher in calories?

Where does sushi sit in the grand scheme of healthy food? Is it good for you? I love spicy tuna rolls. I also really like the crispy, spicy mayo drizzled concoctions they make at the sushi bar... but that's a no-brainer, they aren't good for you. How about sashimi? It's raw fish, white rice and some wasabi... that's not bad, right? Plain oatmeal is good with fruit in moderate portions, right? Potatoes? I've read that they cause sugar cravings. Is that true? Maybe that's why the addition of potatoes in my diet may show weight gain - I crave other bad foods. Hmmmm... Just putting my thoughts on print today. I'm think sushi rolls and sashimi for lunch is okay. But potato bar for dinner is not. The safe bet is stir fry. But I do get tired of stir fry.

I find for me that starches tend to make me "want". Rice, bread, potatoes, sugar...I personally do better when I have little to none but everyone is different. Listen to your body. Sounds like you're finding your "tolerance". The carbs can affect your blood sugar and create a cycle of "want". Do an experiment without them for at least a week (it takes about 4-5 days to get past the initial hump and feeling crabby) and write down what you eat, how you feel afterward and what effect it has on your weight. Always good to know the boundaries of what your body likes.

I think it's the carbs. Do like us Atkins-ers do, replace potatoes with turnips. Also, there's a lot of stuff you can make using various low-carb flours.

I think we all need the same things. But when we are out of balance: sick, fat, skinny, or out of shape, then we need a way to balance that imbalance. Getting the right nutrients today is difficult. Especially with the choices we have available. Which are often depleted of the normal nutrients basic foods usually have. and most of the choices today, being highly processed or prepared foods lack those micro nutrients that corporations really don't care about. There are lots of ways to try to do that. some like to eliminate entire categories (fats, or carbs, or ...) as a way to reach their goals. this often works. However, after the goals are reached (with the usual plateaus on the way, IMO due to having to be so far out of balance the opposite way that they usually were. and they did become "ill, fat, too skinny" due to that 'normal' imbalance...), it is just as difficult to transform to a healthy balanced diet that is providing a good balance of nutrients, fats, carbs, proteins, minerals, that will be an easy lifestyle choice, without cravings, without wanting to gorge, (due to lack of proper nutrients). But it is possible. I don't try too hard to do that, I am not strict with my diet, but I just choose foods that are varied, healthy, good for me, & taste good. So, I'm able to maintain my weight pretty much where I want it to be, easily. Best wishes for you≄ you can do it! :) j

Sushi is very popular amongst the thin people in CA & NY, despite the rice (carbs). Trick is to only eat about 4-6 pieces, max. Don't eat dessert, don't slop it down with sugary drinks (including sweetened tea). Note that people from those areas do a LOT of walking, running, yoga, or just general gym exercise. Emulate and you'll look like them, too.

I have to moderate the carbs to keep losing.

You are asking great questions. I have noticed that sugar, flour, grains, and high glycemic foods don't belong in my diet (in general) if I am serious about weight loss.

Think about what they feed animals to fatten them up for slaughter... grains. With hogs, most farmers fatten them up with starchy foods, like corn, potatoes and yes, grains. Starchy and sugary foods will fatten you up. Best to stick with non-starchy vegetables, nice quality meat, eggs and fish, minimal fruit like berries (as it contains a lot of sugar - fructose), some dairy (it also contains sugar - lactose), and add some healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil and flax seed oil to your diet. Those healthy oils will keep you full longer and you won't have as many cravings. Don't try to go Low Carb and Low Fat, you will be constantly hungry and not lose weight. Add those healthy fats to your diet and you will notice less hunger and you will lose weight.

That's a great point, since I've started eating grains again my weight won't drop. Thank you for opening my eyes. More protein and no grain
