Why do have to stay up to keep her safe?

They are both to be house cats (we live in a high flat). As I said on another post my older cat is afraid of the kitten and snarls and hisses every time they meet. Because it is the weekend I am sitting up through the night with them, just to ensure they don't come to blows. Lily is neither up nor down, but Lucy is well p*ssed, and at 10 times Lily's weight I don't want her getting physical. Things are settling down a bit since Friday. I limit Lily's movement, but don't want to limit Lucy's as she has always had the run off the house. We'll get there eventually.
