Hello Everybody!
2 weeks ago I switched to Keto but now I`m really thinking to go for plant base diet. Except the heavy kcal weekends, I`m doing really well on Keto. But, I can`t think of shovelling the bacon and butter (butter is every day). I love lean meat so don`t get me wrong, I love meat!
I think going plant base may be cancer preventing option? What do you think?
Please give me some opinion or what you read in your sources because I`m confused as a F...flower.

I also don't do keto because of medical issues in me and my family. Honestly, you should do what works for you and don't worry what anyone else thinks.

Greatnae- I`m glad you are not on keto considering your health condition. Keto works for me (except the bacon and other crap) but I`m worried it may be a silent killer.

A ketogenic diet starves cancer cells. Cancer thrives and grows on glucose. You don't have to eat butter or bacon to do Keto- you can eat healthy fats like avocado, olive oil and coconut oil plus the fats in eggs and cheese. I personally think vegetarian eating on Keto is very easy to achieve. Many of my meals end up being vegetarian. Vegan would be challenging though. Cheers!

In other words doctors are using ketogenic diets in conjunction with other therapies to fight cancer. There seems to be a lot of exciting, currently ongoing research on the benefits of a ketogenic diet with respect to cancer.

Ketogenic diets have been used in medicine for over 100 years!

I was literally struggling with deciding this very same thing for myself. A keto diet has really helped me with feeling full among other things. If you are on facebook there's a group called vegetarian keto that I think you would like! Totally attainable!

Thanks Bluecoaster, that`s what I was actually thinking. Healthy fats is the way but how to get the moderate amount of protein? It means I will have to shovel lots of Chia Seeds (I eat them almost every day). Almost all of the carbs in chia are fiber which helps you with number two in the toilet.

People are different, and what works for one person won't work for everyone. I know there are lots of Keto fans on this site, but I am not interested in it. Sorry, but I like carbs too much! Half of diet success is finding what works for YOU, and that will include food preference and lifestyle. Nobody will stick with a diet they hate!

Whey and egg protein are vegetarian and are extremely well absorbed by the body to repair tissue. You can very easily get all of your protein from vegetarian meals utilizing eggs and/or dairy with each meal. However doing vegan ( no egg or dairy) I think you would need to go back to lots of boxed/packaged foods made in factories or high carb and many resort to soy (yuck) to get complete proteins that are actually able to support muscle tissue. Plants have protein but unless you combine them in special ways (like eating rice and beans together to form a complete protein) your body will be deficient. A healthy vegan diet is possible but it requires serious reading and most likely lots of carbs to get complete proteins. It also most likely requires supplements too. Some people who are very well read and prepare their meals thoughtfully and use supplements thrive as vegans. Its not easy to do well though by the average person. And I think it would be impossible to buy everything fresh and still get adequate "complete" proteins. This issue of complete vs. incomplete proteins in a vegan diet is an extremely important one that needs resolving before calling a vegan diet "healthy" and "balanced" Anyone with a real degree in nutrition or medicine with an interest in nutrition will back me up on this.

One more thing Mal- many of us on Fat Secret are doing Keto because we have blood sugar regulation problems that promote weight gain. Keto solves that problem for us. Very low carb is certainly not necessary for everyone!

I count calories and this software supports the concept very well. I've increased my fruit, vegetable, and whole grain intake but I am still able to enjoy all the foods I like without remorse resulting in healthy weight loss by changing my eating habits slowly. Don't jump into something you truly aren't able to support throughout the years. I like food and by taking a look at my habits I've been able to slowly change the behavior. Decrease one thing at a time, the result is slow but I haven't missed out on enjoying the finer things. It took 3 years to gain 30 pounds and I'll be happy if I lose 30 pounds in 2. I've lost 15 in 5 months with the help of this software. I still eat bacon and I still love butter. There's a great book called The Real Skinny, I think you can buy it for a dollar, I did.

Keto doesn't have to be all bacon and butter! I eat a lot of chicken and veggies. I am very much into preserving lean muscle mass and losing the fat on my body. Check out either Optimal Ketogenic Living or Ketogains on FB. Very informative!
