Nimm's Journal, 18 May 12

The latest reminder I'm not as clever as I think I am: just got back from the doctor who ordered me off of strenuous exercise, including lifting, pending an MRA. While squatting last Monday, I forgot to breathe properly during the last set of a heavy weight with high reps. This apparently put too much pressure on the blood vessels in my head, and they either dilated, or actually dissected. Until the MRA clears me, no strenuous exercise.

Learn from my mistakes: If you lift heavy weights....remember to breathe. In on the negative, out on the positive.

@Milla: Thank you. My constant evangelizing for weight training will be kind of ironic if I end up dying from a cranial hemorrhage, right? Fortunately, it's probably just a case of having some headaches for a while, and using smaller weights in the meantime.

Yeah... try not to bleed out and die, that would definitely be bad for the weightlifting reputation..

Two weeks enforced downtime until the MRA. Seems like a long time to wait if I actually blew a gasket.

Oh my. I'm sorry to hear about that. How do you feel? What were your symptoms? Hate to steer you away from your workouts but you have to follow Dr. orders. We workout to be healthy so if you have to take it easy for a while to stay healthy so be it.

@Trublu: As I was trying to complete the final squat rep on the "heavy" day, I didn't breathe out on the way up. I felt a lot of pressure in my head, and had an acute painful headache in the back of my skull that stretched around the left side. For the last week, when I've raised my blood pressure it comes back, and subsides once the exertion is done. When it's not acute, I'm fine. The increase in blood pressure from the squat, combined with my failure to exhale, apparently dilated the vessels in my head to a point where they are putting pressure on the meninges, causing the pain. The vessels probably did not dilate enough to dissect, but they may have. Hence the MRA.

Wow, Nimm. Scary! I hope you feel better soon. I hope you didn't injure yourself further. Did you complete your lift and realize you felt wrong? This is not good. I hope you feel better soon, buddy, and thanks for the reminder. Wow

Trust me I know how hard it is to follow any doctor's advice about sittin still and taking time off...oh so hard! It is wise to get your gasket checked out, but not being able to do what you need/want to do just sucks. Hang in there only one more week!!!
