Allen14's Journal, 19 Feb 18

Hi everyone, I am a dad of 2 hitting onto the big 50 soon. I am aiming to gain weight unlike others here. I am a fitness person into gym 5days a week. Bodybuilding is been my passion since I was a teenager. Over the years I have learned so much about food/diet/ and how to loose body fat as well as gain weight. These days I do it to stay fit as opposed to competing. I enjoy cooking food and eating it of course! Loosing weight is the easiest thing I find compared to gaining weight. You see if you eat healthy normally then it’s really hard to gain weight. If you eat unhealthy it’s easy to gain weight as unhealthy foods tend to be high in calories.
Take a plate of chips at 100g for example, it’s 320 calories. Take a 100g of chickpeas is 164 calories.

But which is easier to eat? How much more beneficial is one to the other?

This site is probably just as good for gaining as losing, since it's mainly about tracking and planning. I'm not sure gaining is harder than losing. They are probably about the same. What is challenging in either is getting proportions of fat to protein to carb right so that we gain or lose in a healthy way. Good luck!

On paper losing weight is the easiest thing yes, but temptation is one of the hardest things to resit and for most people willpower is a difficult thing to conquer. Good luck on your journey.

Allen I would follow you if you were losing. But when you say your intention is to gain, is that muscle that you are trying to build? In what respect are you trying to bulk up.

Thanks all for your encouragement! Bandraid I am training to gain muscle weight yes. What I do is bulk up by having around 300 cal above my macros daily. Then as my weight increases and levels out to about 3kg above where I want it to be, I change my macro ratio of fats and carbs while maintaining the protein macro. By doing so I start to reduce my body fat percentage. At this stage I will do 30 min cardio in the morning and then 30 min evening. Wooble from my personal experience I found that when one eats right the temptation soon goes. Although as you said willpower is the key in the early days. But you have to stay focused on your goals.

Bubblegum14 Thanks, To loose body fat you need to firstly calculate your macros to find out your maintenance macros. Once you get the numbers, then you maintain the protein and carbs while you reduce the fats. Do cardio to help use fat for energy.

It’s hard to keep fat below 30 percent! 🤔😕

Bubblegum14 Basically to loose fat you need to firstly eat whole foods cut of none whole ones, eat a calorie deficit diet of around 300-500 less calories than your maintenance. Here is a great way to calculate this. https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/macronutcal.htm Stick to regular meals and eat on time. Our bodies use carbs and fat for energy. Cut your carbs down to just veg and salads with protein. No fats, your body soon starts to use fat for energy. The fat will start coming off.
